The ECIGAL research group at the University of A Coruña (Spain) is dedicated to promoting and researching Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and other critical and transformative approaches to education. We understand GCE to be an ethical strategy for eco-social transformation, through collaborative learning and commitment to building just and supportive societies.
We have dedicated a great deal of our work to linking regulated education institutions (such as schools and universities) with other relevant social actors, such as NGOs and other organizations. In addition, from the perspective of social education, we work in various other educational and community contexts, promoting critical and transformative processes that contribute to social and environmental justice.
We prioritize the use of participatory research methodologies and the development of critical (digital) literacy that can help us identify, reinterpret, and deconstruct global inequalities.
TRAJECTORY

2020
In 2013, a group of UDC researchers participated in a research project about Development Education led by the NGDO Galician International Solidarity (SIG).
Since then, we have conducted a continuous series of collaborative research-in-action experiences, funded by the Xunta de Galicia in competitive funding bids. Each project responds to problems or concerns that were detected in the previous one.
After years working in primary and secondary schools, we turned our attention to university education and introduced ECG in our own own courses, with the support of SIG and AGARESO. Using various strategies, and drawing on communication resources offered by new technologies, we sought to cast students as protagonists of their own learning.
We have continued to work at the university level, in early childhood, primary, and social education degree programs, as well as teacher training at the Master´s level.
We initiated a process of social cartography as a strategy to connect ONGDs and teachers involved in developing GCE projects. This has resulted in a digital map that allows the user to contact people, delve into the details of specific projects, identify methodologies and topics, search for programs and experiences, and so on.
As a result of this history of experience, we have created the Research Group on Global Citizenship Education at the University of A Coruña (ECIGAL), which brings together researchers from the Faculty of Education with experience in this field. It provides a vehicle for continuing the previous lines of action, to reinforce GCE work in the Galician university system, and to expand into new areas of research and action and new collaborations with public and private entities.
